Joy, surprise, frustration, sorrow – all of the emotions we feel are reflected in our facial expressions, and over time they leave deeper and deeper traces on our skin. One of the most classic methods of counteracting wrinkles is treating them with botulinum toxin type A, which is sold under several different names.

To correct wrinkles, a tiny needle is used to inject Botox® into several different sites along the appropriate facial muscle. The drug prevents the chemical messengers from conducting impulses from the nerve endings to the muscles. Subsequently, the muscles do not respond, and the wrinkles disappear, making the face look relaxed and younger. By calming the muscles and decreasing the scope of facial expression, fewer wrinkles are formed as the patient ages.

The effects of Botox® do not begin until three days after the injection. They reach their full efficacy after 8-10 days and will last for 4-6 months, depending on the patient.
